No-Code vs. Code: Choosing the Right Tool
A practical framework for choosing between no-code workflows and custom code, based on your logic, data, and operating needs.

Start with the workflow
The useful question is not whether code is better than no-code. It is which approach fits your inputs, exceptions, integrations, and the person who will maintain it.
A visual workflow can be a good fit for connecting established apps. Custom code can help when the logic, interface, or data processing needs more control. Many projects use both.
Four questions to ask
- Who will maintain it? A visual editor may help an operations team make routine changes. Code may suit a team already using version control and automated tests. Both still need testing before changes go live.
- What happens when it fails? Plan retries, duplicate prevention, alerts, and a manual recovery path. The platform alone does not make the workflow reliable.
- Where does the data go? Map storage, model providers, integrations, and access permissions. Self-hosting gives you more infrastructure control, but also responsibility for updates, backups, and security. It does not automatically establish compliance.
- What is the full running cost? Estimate actual steps, executions, retries, hosting, API usage, and maintenance. There is no universal monthly volume at which custom code becomes cheaper.
When custom code is useful
Consider code for unusual data transformations, integrations without a suitable connector, browser automation, or detailed evaluation of AI outputs. Complexity matters more than a fixed number of workflow nodes.
For a routine handoff between supported apps, a small no-code pilot may be enough. Test representative examples and failure cases before expanding it.
How I approach the choice
I start by mapping the process and agreeing what a successful result looks like. Then I recommend the smallest maintainable setup that meets those requirements, including ownership and handover.
